PRUSSIA.ZIP contains 53 files of data taken from volumes of
Preussiche Statistik.  These include data at the Kreis
(county) level for vital events annually from 1875 to 1910,
population censuses quinquennially from 1875 to 1910,
education censuses quinquennially from 1886 to 1911, and
occupation censuses for 1882, 1895, and 1907.  Only the data
needed to carry out a project on fertility decline in
Prussia were made machine readable. Hence, these files
include only a small portion of the data available in the
300 or so volumes of Preussische Statistik.

Use PKUNZIP.EXE to unzip PRUSSIA.ZIP. When unzipped the 53
files will take up about 19 megabytes of disk space. Each
file is in Lotus 123 .wk3 format and is largely self-
explanatory.  The first row consists of the labels for the
columns. The first column is the first three letters of the
Regierungsbezirk name to which the Kreis belongs, the second
column is the Kreis name, the third column is the Kreis
type. The other columns are data.  Regierungsbezirke are
similar to provinces, Kreise are similar to counties.  The
Kreis type is either 0, 1, or 2 (0=Kreis, 1=Landkreis,
2=Stadtkreis).  Details regarding the exact definitions of
terms used in these files can be found in the relevant
Preussische Statistik volumes.  The serious researcher is
strongly encouraged to consult these volumes before using
these data.
